Is Focus a Thing?
Focus is defined in the American dictionaries as a noun and a verb. Defined as a noun, focus is a concentration of attention or energy on something. For example, “The focus of activity moved to neuroscience and gathering books and articles on the topic.”  Or, “He is clearly out of focus and needs to exercise the best actions.” In addition, focus can also be a point of convergence of light (or other radiation) or the point from which the point diverges. It’s even interesting that focus as a noun is meant as a “stress.”  This is what we would refer to in NLP as a nominalization – or a verb that wants to be a noun. Verbs are action. Let’s go on to focus as a verb.
How is Focus an Action?
Let’s use “focus” as a verb and see what happens. “Concentrate and center” on bringing your body into balance and you are focusing on your body. Focus on school and you “bring your energies and emotions together” to be more present with scholastic aims.  Concenter or “bring into alignment” actions into a business plan and you are focusing on the plan that answers your business needs.
Step by Step Focus
This morning I was coaching and my client wanted more “focus.” It  helps to define exactly what it means to the individual, so I asked a few questions.
Me: What is it like when you’re not focusing or in focus?
Client: I’m in overwhelm.
Me: Ok. What is the opposite of that old overwhelm?
Client: Lazerbeam!
Me: Wow! Ok. Where overwhelm is low and laserbeam is high, what happens in the middle?
Client: Knowing. I’m knowing and focusing on what I need to be doing.
Me: Hmmmm…  Focusing on what you need to be doing… what comes before “knowing”?
Client: Desire!
Me: So, you start out with overwhelm, move to desire, knowing and something else … and then Lazerbeam?
Client: Yes.
Me: What happens between “knowing” and “lazerbeam”?
Client: I’m energetic!
Me: Ok. So, you move from knowing to energetic to lazerbeam?
Client: Yes, that’s how it works.
Me: Ok, would you be willing to do some homework?
Client: Sure.
Me: Would you be willing to be “mindful” and chart your day from Morn/Noon/Nite and notice when and how that works in your day?
Client: Sure.
Me: Ok, so let’s touch bases after a day or so and see how that works for you.
Client: Thanks!
