TaxesIt’s that most wonderful time, when many of us have run out of extension time, and must task ourselves to do our taxes…OR NOT. (Rich’s Taxing Adventure!)
For a little levity here is what a couple of wise people, before us, had to say about taxes:
“What is the difference between a taxidermist and a tax collector? The taxidermist takes only your skin” [Mark Twain]
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” [Benjamin Franklin]
WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney shouldn’t be criticized for using off-shore tax havens because “it’s really American to avoid paying taxes, legally,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.)

I don’t know too many people that look forward to paying taxes and on a higher note I do appreciate the benefits we get from doing it. Like having paved roads, police and fire protection, green parks and libraries…etc.
It may be true that all of us do not want to pay any more than necessary. With the help of TurboTax and a good CPA we usually don’t.
So let’s see for a couple days, once a year, I get to pull out the filing box. Pull out the expenses and make sure they are in the right categories and then put it into a software program that makes it all pretty easy.
Doesn’t sound overly taxing does it?
A famous Eastern saying: “Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional.” Unknown Monk.
Okay! I have my coffee mug filled. TurboTax is loaded. Table is cleared. Receipts in hand…GO!
Fast-forward a couple days. Almost done. I’m letting the taxes percolate and reviewing last year’s to make sure I didn’t miss anything. Not bad, It’s Oct.1st and I have two weeks to drop them in the mail. I can live with that and now for a celebratory latte.
Outcome…Very little pain, just took a bit of time and some sorting. Suffering wasn’t required and since it is optional I will pass on that.
Ahh the relief of knowing I have until April to file my extension and then no pain and certainly no suffering as I pay my citizenship fee for another wondrous year in America.
