So much of what people say comes from words quoted years ago. Have you heard a quote or an idom that stuck in your head? Do you know when and how these words were first stated? You might want to check it out sometime. The origins may surprise you.
I found myself recently reading “Under the Deodars ” by Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). Something in the conversation struck a nerve with me, uncomfortable feelings from words Kipling used. The sentence felt off, but I didn’t know why. Just an odd feeling.
Kipling is conversing with a lady, with whom he is about to elope. She asks him about the affects of their plans, and Kipling writes, “We can’t make omelets without breaking eggs.” Hmmmmm.
Think about those words. What do they mean to you … in this time?
This book is yellow and very old. I wondered if these words were first quoted by Kipling. I Googled the quote. Several entries came up, attributing the words to Stalin and others, but then I came to an article on the site Slate where the author talks about the war-like beginning of these words.
Francois de Charette led a Royalist counter-revolt in France in 1796, where hundreds of thousands of people were killed. Facing the deaths of so many persons, his response was, “omelets are not made without breaking eggs.” He was executed by firing squad.
Character Strengths and Hats
What hat are you wearing? Character can be reflected in the words we use. In your mind, wear an explorer hat. You may discover a power and strength inside by seeing your face framed with this symbolic hat. SPEAK AS IF you were about to leave for a new place to explore. What happens inside? Place a chef hat upon your head and cook a gourmet meal in your mind. Imagine talking about how you put the ingredients together. How do you feel inside? Strengths conceived and perceived in the mind can be created into belief.
Become the highest and best possible you! This is your time to originate your own being.
