How Effective is Hypnotherapy?
By Cat Wilson
One of the first questions we hear when people call about hypnosis is, “How effective is hypnotherapy?” That’s a good question, and one that you want to discuss with your Practitioner. Let’s talk about what hypnotherapy can be used for and how it is most effective.
Do you know anyone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also called IBS?
Hypnotherapy has been proven as very effective for this painful health concern. A study was done in September of 2006 at the University of Birmingham, UK where data was researched and gathered and 20 studies were identified. These studies demonstrated hypnotherapy to be effective in t he management of IBS and over half of the trials showed significant benefits (10 of 18).

Women, Breast Cancer and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
My own mother had surgery for breast cancer a couple years ago. Prior to the surgery, my partner created a special guided visualization to help her before surgery to feel free, unashamed and at peace so the surgeon could give her the best experience. She successfully experienced a calm surgery and healing process. This is well known to clinicians and clinical researchers. Recently the University of Tennessee released a study that confirmed the effectiveness of reducing pain and suffering among women with metastatic breast cancer. Patients in this study attended a year-long weekly group intervention including hypnosis, where the clinicians’ findings showed that hypnosis slowed the increase in reported pain.
The same group of clinicians also decided to study hypnosis response with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and the challenge women faced with the pain management. Again hypnosis was found to reduce TMD pain.

Headaches: Ask the Children
Life is stressful. Children struggle as much as adults. Who do you know who has a child who suffers from headaches? Perhaps you are dealing with headaches with your children. Good news! Reports from the University of Minnesota show in long-term follow-up studies that self-hypnosis training “is associated with significant improvement of headaches and with an enduring positive effect for many years following training.”
