Reflections on Nothing by Rich Aanrich
Most of us have seen the cartoon where a guru opens up a box with a great big smile and says ” ahh… Just what I always wanted, nothing,” and he means it!
Nothing is:
1. (Indefinite) no thing, not anything, as of an implied or specified class of things: I can give you nothing;
2. no part or share: to have nothing to do with this crime;
3. a matter of no importance or significance: it doesn’t matter, it’s nothing;
4. indicating the absence of anything perceptible; nothingness;
5. indicating the absence of meaning, value, worth, etc.: to amount to nothing;
6. zero quantity; naught.
Ask for Nothing?
That sounds different. Are you ready to get a big box of “nothing” for Christmas?
Let’s try it! We can all sing, “All I want for Christmas is …. nothing,” and then look forward to getting nothing? It would certainly make this Christmas very different. Ready to join me? OK, let’s do it! “All I want for Christmas is, nothing.” (clap your hands) All I want for Christmas is, nothing!” (clap your hands)
The upside would be they if we got what we asked for we wouldn’t be surprised and we shouldn’t be disappointed. No clothes to return. No fruitcake to use as a doorstop, etc. Of course, in a cartoon it looks funny, but in life we are disappointed or sad, angry, stressed, disappointed … time for more thought.
What some miss in the translation is that the enlightened version is what in a guru’s perspective could mean, “what’s inside the box is everything!” Openness, peace, space, the connection to all that is, everything, everywhere! Ahh .. Peace.
Nothingness Gifts
Still could this give us a moment to think? Maybe the absence of giving or getting things might actually be better? Could we give a gift of time to someone, or maybe make something they could use or donate?
Give “no thing” … NOTHING… unless it has love or care in it.
I’m ready! Let’s sing it “all I wasn’t for Christmas is nothing, no-thing, nothing…” (Peace)
I’ll look forward to getting nothing from you this season and I’m holding nothing for you, too. I will include love to you when it’s sent!
Blessings to you all this Holiday Season!
